A 3-inch Megalodon tooth is a substantial, triangular fossil, similar to a great white shark tooth but much larger, featuring sharp, serrated edges for cutting, a robust V-shaped root, and a smooth, enamel-covered crown that's usually gray, black, or brown due to fossilization, displaying rich texture and often some damage like a worn tip or missing piece, common for its size which represents a mature but not record-breaking shark.
Very Good Enamel and Triangle Shape specimen....
Key Characteristics:
- Shape & Size: Triangular, broad at the base, tapering to a point, measuring 3 inches along the longest edge (slant height).
- Enamel & Root: Smooth, polished enamel on the crown; the root is porous and bone-like.
- Serrations: Fine, steak-knife-like serrations on the blade edges.
- Color: Varies from gray, black, brown, tan, to even blue/green, depending on mineralization.
- Bourlette: A chevron-shaped band where the crown meets the root, often visible.
- Condition: May have natural wear, feeding damage (like a broken tip), or polishing, with high-quality specimens having intact features.
- Rarity/Value: 3-inch teeth are common but prized for their visual impact, representing a significant piece of natural history from the Miocene-Pliocene era (23 to 3.6 million years ago).
